Survivor Services

Expeditions are service-based trips that are developed and organized by the Travis Manion Foundation for families of the fallen to come together and serve others in honor of their fallen heroes. This group experience provides opportunities for survivors to continue the legacy of selfless service. Expedition’s help participants continue to heal and develop a support system that provides them an opportunity to serve alongside other veterans and survivors. Participants who have gained the most from the experience are typically 18 months or further from their time of loss. These Expeditions are fully funded by the Travis Manion Foundation and are organized annually in locations across the world.

Upcoming Expeditions

West Virginia Expedition – Richwood WV (Sept. 19th – Sept 24th, 2016) The Travis Manion Foundation will host an Expedition for survivors to honor their loved ones through service. Together the group will participate in multiple construction projects to benefit the flood ravaged town of Richwood. Registration for this Expedition is now open, if you are interested in participating in this Expedition please submit an Expedition Inquiry.

New Mexico Expedition – Gallup, NM (October 16th – 22nd, 2016)  The Travis Manion Foundation will host an Expedition for survivors to honor their loved ones through service. Together the group will participate in multiple construction projects to benefit military veterans living in the Navajo Nation. Registration for this Expedition is now open, if you are interested in participating in this Expedition please submit an Expedition Inquiry.

Shane’s Challenge – San Raimundo, Guatemala (January 29th – February 4th, 2017)  The Travis Manion Foundation will host an Expedition for survivors to honor their loved ones through service. Together the group will participate in a home build for a family in need. Space is limited and registration is not yet open for this Expedition. Please check back for more information or click the “Start Here” button found below to fill out an Expedition Inquiry for this opportunity.

Dominican Republic Expedition – Santiago, DR (November 26th – December 2nd, 2017)  The Travis Manion Foundation will host an Expedition for survivors to honor their loved ones through service. Montana Expedition – Billings, MT (Jul 31st. – Aug 6th, 2016) The Travis Manion Foundation hosted an Expedition for survivors to honor their loved ones through service. Survivor’s Summit – Salmon River, ID (July 12th – July 19th, 2016) The Travis Manion Foundation hosted an Expedition for surviving wives, fiancées and girlfriends in the Salmon River area. During this expedition, these survivors took part in white water rafting, hiking and were also able to help with a service project in the area. Teen Expedition – Delaware Water Gap, PA (June 24th – June 30th, 2016) The Travis Manion Foundation hosted an outdoor Expedition for surviving teens ages 15-18 years old. During this Expedition these teens were able to honor their fallen hero by participating in service and challenging themselves during this backpacking and rock climbing experience. Men’s Expedition – Dover, DE (May 9th – May 15th, 2016) The Travis Manion Foundation hosted an Expedition in partnership with NEMCO Motorsports in conjunction with a NASCAR race weekend. During this Expedition survivors, volunteers and TMF staff were able to help honor the fallen by participating in a service project which benefited a military Veteran. Janet Manion Memorial Expedition – Bucks County, PA (April 19th -24th, 2016) The Travis Manion Foundation hosted its JLM Expedition to honor the legacy of service of Janet Manion, the founder of TMF. During this Expedition survivors, volunteers and TMF staff got to honor the fallen by serving at The Well, a recovery center for survivors of human trafficking.Read More… To see photos of this Expedition, please click here.


Shane’s Challenge Fall 2015 – San Raimundo, Guatemala (October 14- 20, 2015) The Travis Manion Foundation is proud to partner with American Airlines and J. Walter Thompson Worldwide to host an Expedition for families of the fallen. The goal of this Expedition was to change the lives of a family of eight by building them a new home to replace the lean-to shelter where they currently lived. Shane’s Challenge 2015 – San Raimundo, Guatemala (January 25-31, 2015) Twenty-five survivors, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) staff, and volunteers traveled to San Raimundo, Guatemala, to honor the service and sacrifice of our fallen heroes. Their mission was to build a home for a family that has never owned one. This is the fourth TMF sponsored house built in the area in conjunction with Casa Por Cristo. Oregon Expedition – Bend, Oregon (Oct 19-25, 2014) In October, the Travis Manion Foundation hosted the first men’s Expedition for survivors. Ten men spent the week honoring their fallen heroes and serving in the local community at a horse rescue ranch in Bend, Oregon. TMF partnered with Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch an equine therapy program for children. The ranch trains rescued horses to become their therapy animals. The TMF participants assisted with a much needed construction project, which consisted of renovating a 1936 wooded railroad boxcar into a bunkhouse for families utilizing the ranch’s equine therapy program. Read More… To see the photos from this Expedition, please click here.


West Virginia Expedition – Richwood, West Virginia (Sept 21-27, 2014) In September, the Travis Manion Foundation will partnered with World Servants to host the 2014 West Virginia Expedition. Participants traveled to Richwood West Virginia to spend a week honoring their fallen heroes and serving in the local community. Serving others was at the heart of the Expedition. The group worked on six construction projects and also did some sewing, cooking and tutoring at the local community center- The Family Center. The construction projects included two roofing projects, rebuilding a porch, electrical work, rebuilding an interior floor, exterior painting, building two hand rails, pouring concrete and building a cinderblock addition to the Family Center. Read More…


Survivor Summit Expedition – Lima, Peru (July 15-25, 2014) A group of 11 surviving wives, fiancés and girlfriends of fallen military heroes traveled to Cusco, Peru with the Travis Manion Foundation on July 15, 2014 to spend 10 days honoring the fallen by challenging the living. The women, who traveled from all over the U.S., came together and embarked on a journey to hike the mountains and continue to heal from their loss. The Travis Manion Foundation organized and funded the expedition, called Survivor Summit 2014, which was led by Soldiers 2 Summit, an organization that empowers survivors to overcome barriers and reclaim their lives by embracing the past, present and future. Kentucky Expedition – Wheelwright, KY (March 30 – April 5, 2014) Fifteen survivors and veterans embarked upon a week-long service Expedition in Wheelwright, Kentucky. Members of five families of the fallen, as well as two veterans, spent the week serving the community in honor of their fallen heroes. The Travis Manion Foundation partnered with World Servants to organize and host the Kentucky Expedition. The group spent the week working on projects at three different sites: a local senior center and 2 homes of families of veterans. Shane’s Challenge 2014 – San Raimundo, Guatemala (February 2 – February 7, 2014) Seven families of the fallen and veterans who served with their fallen heroes traveled to San Raimundo, Guatemala for Shane’s Challenge 2014. Tasked with building a house for a family in need, the group quickly found that the trip was about more than just construction. “Building the home was a metaphor for the transformation that the families are going through,” one veteran wrote about the experience. West Virginia Expedition – Richwood, West Virginia (September 25 – September 29, 2013) The Travis Manion Foundation partnered with the World Servants organization to host a service project in Richwood, a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. Together, families of the fallen and veterans served the local community in honor of their loved ones. The participants worked on construction and home improvement projects in the town and surrounding area. In addition, a Character Does Matter presentation will be presented at the local high school. Survivor Summit Expedition – Granby, Colorado (August 4 – 7, 2013) Twelve surviving wives, fiancés and girlfriends embarked upon a 4-day retreat in Granby, Colorado in August. The Expedition was focused on empowering the survivors to carry on the legacy of their loved ones as they experienced the healing power of the mountains. Each participant suffered the loss of her husband, fiancé or boyfriend who served or was serving in the military. Shane’s Challenge 2013 – San Raimundo, Guatemala (February 17-23, 2013) Lance Cpl. Shane Harris, USMC, 23, was killed on Sept. 3, 2006, while conducting combat operations in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province.  To honor Shane and spread his legacy of compassion and selflessness, Pat ‘Pappy’ Harris and his family traveled to Guatemala in 2011 to build a house for impoverished local residents.  The experience was so rewarding that they wanted to recreate Shane’s Challenge and share the powerful, healing, and empowering journey with other Gold Star families.  In February 2013, the Harris family reached their goal.  Shane’s Challenge was replicated and expanded to include the families of four other fallen heroes.  Participants included the Harris family, families of SSG Marc Small, USA,  PFC Justin Davis, USA, SGT Ashly Moyer, USA, and Sgt Thomas Bagosy, USMC.


Shane’s Challenge – San Raimundo, Guatemala (November 6 – 12, 2011) The Travis Manion Foundation sponsored the family of LCpl Shane P. Harris to travel to Guatemala to build a home for family that had never owned one. This trip to the region was the first for the Harris family and the inspiration for the Expedition program. Through Survivor Service Expeditions, the Travis Manion Foundation has empowered families of the fallen to serve in honor of their loved ones. To learn more about Expeditions please contact us.
