JBLM, WA - SWEAT LODGE RENOVATION

Join Travis Manion Foundation and the Native American Council of the American Lake VA Hospital (AMVA) in a vital community service project: the renovation of the sacred sweat lodge serving our local Native American veterans and those residing at the American Lake domiciliary.

The sweat lodge ceremony is a profoundly significant and ancient tradition for many Native American cultures. It is a powerful practice for spiritual purification, physical cleansing, and mental and emotional healing. Within the lodge's heated stones and steam, participants engage in prayer, reflection, and communal support, fostering a sense of connection to themselves, their ancestors, and the Great Spirit. This ceremony offers a unique and culturally relevant pathway to healing and wellness, particularly meaningful for veterans seeking peace and reconciliation after their service.

This vital structure at the AMVA provides a crucial space for these traditional healing practices. By participating in its renovation, you will directly contribute to the well-being of veterans who rely on this sacred space for strength, comfort, and spiritual renewal.

The AMVA has a rich history of serving our nation's heroes. Originally established in 1923 on 377 acres of Fort Lewis property as the 94th Veterans Hospital, it was dedicated in 1924 as a neuro-psychiatric treatment facility for veterans returning from World War I. Over the decades, it has evolved into a comprehensive multi-care facility, dedicated to providing a wide range of medical, mental health, and rehabilitative services to veterans in the region. The presence of the sweat lodge on these grounds underscores the hospital's commitment to holistic care that respects the diverse cultural and spiritual needs of all veterans.

Volunteers are needed to help clear debris, split firewood, and replace the sweat lodge canvas. No experience is required—just a willingness to help and respect for the sacred purpose of the project
