9/11 HEROES RUN

9/11 HEROES RUN EVENTS TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO GAVE EVERYTHING_

UNITING COMMUNITIES TO HONOR + REMEMBER THE SACRIFICES OF SEPTEMBER 11TH

Our 9/11 events unite communities internationally with the goal to never forget the sacrifices of all of our nation’s heroes, from the first responders who came to the aid of thousands of Americans in New York City, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania, to the service members who have served with pride since. Travis Manion Foundation helps organize 9/11 Heroes Run events all over the world, ensuring we honor the lives of those who gave theirs in 2001 and in the wars since.

The 2024 Race Season is opening soon. If you are interested in hosting a run in your area, please contact Jessica Gardner, at jessica.gardner@travismanion.org.

9/11 Heroes Run
Annual 5K Events to Remember

Uniting Communities + Honoring Sacrifices

Since 2008, at our inaugural 9/11 Heroes Run event in Doylestown, PA, runners, walkers, and ruckers have come together to honor our nation’s first responders who selflessly sacrificed on September 11th and service members who have served in the wars since. Since our first race, we’ve expanded to races in over 90 communities worldwide, uniting 60,000 people each year.

Other ways to honor the Fallen

Shadow Events

Shadow Events are smaller, community-run 9/11 Heroes Run events. Join local members in person to run, walk, or ruck to honor the sacrifice of those lost on September 11, 2001, and those who have served in the wars since. Shadow events are informal and smaller than other in-person events.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

    Is TMF a tax-exempt, not-for-profit charity?

Yes, TMF is 501(c)(3) as determined by the IRS that returns, on average, 90% of all donations received back to programming for veterans and military families of the fallen. Our EIN# is 41-2237951.

Is my personal registration fee tax-deductible?

The fee to participate in a 9/11 Heroes Run event is not deductible, but any additional donation made on top of your registration fee is.

Are the race participant t-shirts true to size?

All race shirts are pre-shrunk, 65% Polyester / 35% Ringspun cotton.  They typically run true to size in fit. Size exchanges are not available so if you are unsure, we recommend registering for one size larger.

Am I guaranteed a race shirt and runner swag?

Only participants who register by September 1st will be guaranteed a race shirt and participant swag. Swag is limited and distributed on a first-come-first-served basis, while supplies last, so we urge all participants to register before September 1st.

When will I get my runner swag?

Registrants for in-person races will receive race swag packet pickup information from their race directors, closer to the date of the event. Shadow Event and Virtual registrants will receive their official race shirt, race bib, and runner swag via direct mail. Packages ship 5-7 days after registration, beginning in mid-July and continuing on a rolling basis.

Do I have to run or can I walk?

    Walking is allowed and welcome.

    Are there age limitations?

Registrants of all ages are welcome.

How do I register to volunteer at a race location?

Anyone may register to volunteer at no charge. Select the button “Volunteer” at the top of this page and register through the same event registration process as race participants.

    Do you offer team registrations?

Yes. To register as part of a team, follow the normal registration process and simply select to add a team name (or select an already existing team name) to add to your registration details.

Is there a military discount to participate?

Yes. We are pleased to offer a special rate for active-duty military and first responders. Simply select the “Active Duty Military or “First Responder” ticket option to register at a discounted rate.

Can I get a refund on my ticket or donation if I decide not to participate/incur an injury/would like to pass my registration to someone else?

There are no refunds or transfers of registrations for any reason.

What should be done in the case of inclement weather?

All 9/11 Heroes Runs will take place in the event of rain. In the event of a major weather emergency, your race location may reschedule the race. In the event that your race is canceled, your registration fee will not be refunded – however, it will be deemed 100% tax-deductible as a donation to TMF’s 9/11 Heroes Run.

Can I register on race day?

Not all locations will offer race day registration. Please check your race location details page. Participants are not guaranteed a race shirt and participant swag if they wait to sign up on race day. Only those who register online before September1st are guaranteed swag.

    Are running strollers permitted?

Typically running strollers are permitted but please check with your specific race location. Not all races are on flat pavement or are stroller compatible. Out of respect for participants without strollers, those with strollers should start at the back of the pack to avoid a ‘traffic jam.’

Do Virtual Run participants receive a GORUCK patch?

Virtual Runner GORUCK registrants will receive a 9/11 Heroes Run GORUCK patch. Patches and shirts will be mailed directly to participants of the Virtual GORUCK division starting in September and continuing through October 15th.

Is there a minimum weight requirement to ruck?

To participate and earn your GORUCK 9/11 Heroes Run patch for fun, there is NO minimum weight requirement to ruck the 9/11 Heroes Run. Everyone registered for the GORUCK division will receive the patch after completion of the event regardless of the weight they carry.

To compete for a medal in the GORUCK division, there are weight requirements and you must weigh in before the start of the event. Please read those rules and requirements here and contact us with any questions.

Will there be medals given for the GORUCK divisions?

At in-person race locations, there will be a total of six medals given: one each to the top three male and top three female ruck finishers. There are no age brackets. Please read the rules and requirements for competing in the competitive GORUCK division.

9/11 Heroes Run GORUCK Division Rules and Requirements

The GORUCK division of the TMF 9/11 Heroes Run requires participants to carry a weighted rucksack or other type weighted backpack. We welcome ruckers of all levels to join us and earn a patch, but to compete for a top finisher medal in the GORUCK division, your ruck must contain the prescribed additional weight based on body weight:

    • For participants weighing 149 lbs or less, a 10-pound weight is required to qualify for the competitive GORUCK division.

    • For those weighing 150 lbs or more, a 20-pound weight is required to qualify for the competitive GORUCK division.

    • Weighted vests are now allowed and do qualify for the competitive GORUCK division.

    • LEOs and Firefighters in full turnout gear also qualify for the competitive GORUCK division.

    • We will weigh your ruck, but not your body! Your body weight is on the honor system.

Rucks will be weighed at each event prior to the start. Ruckers will receive a red Tyvek bracelet and a special mark on their running bib showing their ruck has met the standard for medal consideration. Rucks must be compliant with the prescribed weight for the duration of the event.

Ruck for fun! We enthusiastically welcome ruckers who choose not to carry the minimum weight requirement to participate in the 9/11 Heroes Run and earn their patch! These participants will skip the weigh-in before the event and will not qualify for medal consideration. Come on out and ruck your yoga block!

All participants are required to supply their own rucks and weights.

    Medals:

Medals will be awarded to the top 3 overall male and the top 3 overall female GORUCK finishers who cross the finish line with rucks that meet the weight standard outlined above. There are no age brackets in the GORUCK division.

    Patches:

Every registered participant of the GORUCK division will receive this year’s exclusive 9/11 Heroes Run GORUCK patch no matter what amount of weight they carry.

    Approved Weight list:

Ruckers can carry almost any items to meet the standard weight outlined above. In previous years we’ve seen ruckers carry the following items in their rucks to meet weight requirements:

    • Steel plates

    • Bricks

    • Dumbbells

    • Ankle weights

    • Books

    • The gear of a fallen loved one

*Water bladders or anything else that can be emptied during the event will not qualify as weight.

*Children are not approved weight for the GORUCK division.

Are participant medals given for completing the 5K?

The top three finisher medals are given to the top three male and female finishers in each age bracket of the 5K Run. Age brackets vary at each location and are set based on the ages of the registrants. Participant medals are not given.
