Sweat Lodge Renovation (Day 1)

Join Travis Manion Foundation and the Native American Council of the American Lake VA Hospital (AMVA) in a vital community service project: the renovation of the sacred sweat lodge serving our local Native American veterans and those residing at the American Lake domiciliary.

The sweat lodge ceremony is a profoundly significant and ancient tradition for many Native American cultures. It is a powerful practice for spiritual purification, physical cleansing, and mental and emotional healing. Within the lodge's heated stones and steam, participants engage in prayer, reflection, and communal support, fostering a sense of connection to themselves, their ancestors, and the Great Spirit. This ceremony offers a unique and culturally relevant pathway to healing and wellness, particularly meaningful for veterans seeking peace and reconciliation after their service.

This vital structure at the American Lake VA provides a crucial space for these traditional healing practices. By participating in its renovation, you will directly contribute to the well-being of veterans who rely on this sacred space for strength, comfort, and spiritual renewal.

A LEGACY OF CARE AT AMERICAN LAKE: The American Lake VA Hospital has a rich history of serving our nation's heroes. Originally established in 1923 on 377 acres of Fort Lewis property as the 94th Veterans Hospital, it was dedicated in 1924 as a neuro-psychiatric treatment facility for veterans returning from World War I. Over the decades, it has evolved into a comprehensive multi-care facility, dedicated to providing a wide range of medical, mental health, and rehabilitative services to veterans in the region. The presence of the sweat lodge on these grounds underscores the hospital's commitment to holistic care that respects the diverse cultural and spiritual needs of all veterans.

HONORING SERVICE THROUGH ACTION: This renovation project is proudly sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation Operation Legacy program, which empowers veterans and civilians to unite in service to their communities. By volunteering your time and skills, you will be living the "If Not Me, Then Who..." ethos and directly impacting the lives of veterans who have bravely served our country.

JOIN US IN THIS MEANINGFUL PROJECT: We are seeking volunteers to assist with clearing the area of plant and wood debris, splitting some stumps for firewood (these are heavy and will require multiple people), replacing the canvas around the sweat lodge itself, and some painting. No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to contribute and a respect for the sacred nature of this project.

SPECIAL NOTES: Children are NOT able to attend this date of the Renovation. For a kid friendly date, please look at the Sweat Lodge Renovation on Saturday, June 27, 2026

PROTECTION/EQUIPMENT: Gloves, Eye Protection, and any landscaping tools you feel comfortable with. We will be acquiring a hydraulic splitter for the stumps. If you have one yourself and would like to bring it to speed up the splitting, please reach out to us!! Please RSVP by June 5, 2026.
