Chief Petty Officer Jason R. Freiwald died as a result of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on Sept. 11, 2008, in Afghanistan. He was 30 years old. While a member of the Special Operations community, he served multiple combat deployments in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He was a 1996 graduate of Armanda High School. He is a recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife Stacey and daughter, Jasmine; additionally, he had two brothers serving in the Special Operations community.

Regarding Jason and his brothers’ service in the Navy, Nancy Moegle, a high school teacher at Jason’s high school, said, “their whole family makes everyone in this area quite proud.”

The Travis Manion Foundation honored CPO Freiwald by partnering with Athena Passage, and provided Challenge Grants, empowering a team of seven survivors to travel to England, train, and swim the English Channel in July 2012.  As a member of the team, Stacey Freiwald swam in honor of her husband.

In August, 2013, Jason’s wife, Stacey, participated in the Travis Manion Foundation’s Survivor Summit Expedition in honor of her husband. Stacey also travelled to Lima, Peru with 11 other surviving wives, fiancés and girlfriends for the 2014 Survivor Summit Expedition. She also participated in the 2015 Survivor Summit Expedition.
