Lieutenant John J. “Joe” Houston was killed on October 28th, 2009 when his T-34C Tubomentor plane crashed off the coast of Texas during a training mission. He had been conducting a routine training mission when he lost communication with the base. Also killed in the incident was Lt. Bret Miller. Houston was a Class of 2002 United States Naval Academy graduate and was experienced in combat support operations.

He is survived by his fiancée and his son.

Lt. Houston was honored through the Travis Manion Foundation Character Does Matter program presented during the USNA’s Summer Seminar and USNA STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Camp for rising 11th graders.
