United States Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade McIlvaine, III was killed when his E/A-6B Prowler aircraft crashed during a training flight across Eastern Washington on March 11, 2013. LTJG McIlvaine, III was a 2009 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a degree in Chemistry. He earned the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his excellence in leadership.

A 2006 Deerfield Academy graduate, Lt. j.g. McIlvaine, III was the ski team’s captain. Lt. j.g. McIlvaine, III was also a musician, singer, and bagpipe player. He directed the Pipes and Drums which performed at the St. Patrick’s Day parade and also performed across the United States. He also partook in the Men’s Glee Club. At his graduation, he played the bagpipes and earned a Music Prize and Chemistry Prize.

He is survived by his parents, siblings, and grandparents. Lt. j.g. McIlvaine, III was honored through the Travis Manion Foundation’s Character Does Matter program presented during the USNA’s Summer Seminar and USNA STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Camp for rising 11th graders.
