Survivor Stories

Gold Star Parents Join Operation Legacy to Honor Fallen Daughter

Four years after their loss, Gold Star parents Pat and Doreen Cappelaere remember the legacy that their late daughter LT. Valerie Cappelaere Delaney, one of the few women Navy jet pilots, left behind.

"She was the definition of a servant leader. She would spend 90% of her time helping others," said Pat, who remembers Val's role as the 'heart of her lacrosse team,' who always took younger players under her wing at the U.S. Naval Academy. However, she always remained focused. When things didn't go her way, she would find a way. Val lived by the motto "Adapt and Overcome."

Val's service and leadership live on through the strength of Pat, Doreen, and the community that stands with them. Their commitment to continue Val’s legacy unites survivors, veterans and inspired civilians to serve to honor Val and the countless other service members like her who made the ultimate sacrifice. Operation Legacy activates the community and empowers the next generation to make an impact. Join TMF this November for a service project in your community and help keep the character of the fallen alive.
