City of Houston to Host Joint Veterans Day Commemoration and 9/11 Heroes Run Event, to be Proclaimed as “If Not Me, Then Who…” Day”

Recognizing first responders, veterans and volunteers who have helped city rebuild after Hurricane Harvey, Houston Mayor to preside over Travis Manion Foundation Heroes Run

As the city of Houston continues rebuilding efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the veterans, first responders, and volunteers who have led relief efforts will be recognized on November 11th, 2017, in addition to the city’s official Veterans Day ceremonies. Houston is proud to pay tribute to our military, and this civic celebration will honor and celebrate the brave men, women, and families who pay the ultimate sacrifice for liberty and freedom.

In addition, Mayor Sylvester Turner will issue an official proclamation announcing that November 11th, 2017, will be known as “If Not Me, Then Who…” Day: A recognition of those who stepped forward during Houston’s time of need in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and an echo of the words Marine 1st LT Travis Manion said before his final deployment to Iraq in 2007. The Marine officer’s words have become the Travis Manion Foundation’s official mantra and part of a national call to service inspiring hundreds of thousands who have participated in Travis Manion Foundation events in communities across America.

The celebration will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday November 11, 2017 with a “21 Gun Salute” that will kick off the 9/11 Heroes Run, originally scheduled for the weekend the hurricane hit Houston. The 9/11 Heroes Run in Houston serves as the city’s official September 11th ceremony each year. The salute continues with a job, resource and health fair complete with military displays and activities surrounding the reflection pool in Hermann Square at City Hall. The traditional Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. on the steps of City Hall with a moment of silence in memory of the signing of the WWI Armistice.

TMF has been assisting the Houston community in recovery efforts, by uniting veterans, first responders, and inspired civilians to help those still in need. TMF is dedicating the proceeds from this year’s Houston 9/11 Heroes Run to support relief efforts in the city, which also includes funding for a TMF Service Expedition The Expedition will take place in Spring of 2018, and will see veterans and families of the fallen from across the country come together to assist with recovery efforts in Houston.
