Army Veteran and Operation Legacy service project leader, J Johnson has always had a passion for helping others and making an impact, which is what ultimately led him to join the military. Since he has transitioned off active duty, he feels a commitment to continue serving in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. J says, "Our fallen service members have made the ultimate commitment and have followed through in such a way that I feel, as a service member myself, it is our utmost duty to continue the legacy of service. It’s important no matter who you are, and the great part is, that everyone and anyone can make an impact."
That's why J is inspired to activate his community to participate in service projects for Operation Legacy: A National Week of Service. His military career and passion for serving have allowed him to address the needs of the community and meaningfully deploy volunteers to create change.
On November 18th, veterans, survivors, and the next generation will work side by side to assist in rebuilding efforts in Houston after the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Harvey that left thousands displaced. "Houston’s resiliency and strong community has been amazing to see. Watching the city as a whole, come together to support, encourage, and rebuild is nothing short of amazing, and quite impressive. I'd be remiss to not mention that there is still a long way to go for some.” J explains, “There are people who are not yet back in their homes, and are still financially figuring things out. That is the disheartening part. Thankfully, there has been (and still is) so many rebuilding-type events and projects throughout the entire city. This great city stands strong and will continue to rebuild; and I am looking forward to doing a small project that can help with that.”
However, his passion for serving the needs of the community doesn't stop at rebuilding efforts. He hopes to inspire those who come out to volunteer to be a leader in any aspect of their lives. He subscribes to the idea that "Leaders don't create followers; they create more leaders." J says, "If participating and volunteering in volunteer projects like Operation Legacy is the means to get them to see the potential they have, then I think that is amazing."
Through helping his fellow Houstonians recover from the flood, J is setting an example and inspiring a community and the next generation of leaders to make a difference in both big and small ways. "Action is everything. In order to make a difference, you have to take action."
