Hospital Corpsman Third Class (Fleet Marine Force) Michael Vann Johnson Jr. of Little Rock, Ark., was killed in Iraq while helping a wounded Marine.  He was 25. The sailor was assigned to the Naval Medical Center San Diego, First Marine Division Detachment, San Diego, Calif. He was survived by his wife, Cherise Johnson, his father, Michael Vann Johnson Sr., mother, Jana Norfleet, five sisters, and two brothers.

“He did it for us, so we can walk around the United States and be free. He made peace with God and himself before he went over,” his sister, Janisa Hooks told the Associated Press. “He was just a big kid… Mikey was a fun person. He liked to draw and he loved basketball, a real people’s person.”

The Travis Manion Foundation honored HM3 Michael Vann Johnson Jr. through our Character Does Matter program on Oct. 13, 2011, when we told his story to inspire 305 students at South Philadelphia High School in Philadelphia, Pa.
