2017 - Dominican Republic Expedition

26 - Nov - 2017 thru 02-Dec-2017
Event Recap

On November 26th, a group of survivors and TMF staff members from all over the country met for the first time as they traveled to serve in the Dominican Republic. The group was united by a common cause of honoring a loved one by building a home for a family in need.

The first three days were spent building a house on a narrow ridgeline in the mountains, just outside of Santiago, DR. The first building day was quite the challenge, the group carried the supplies for the building uphill to the site. The second day, the group was able to see the house take shape through framing of the walls and putting the roof on. Local people including children began to come and help with the building, even teaching the group Spanish and eating meals with the group. On the third day doors, windows, furniture and the electric was added the house in preparation for the family to move in.

Before dedicating the house, the group went on an adventurous day of sightseeing in the surrounding area of Santiago where they were staying. The group completed a challenging hike to a waterfall, they spent the rest of the afternoon making their way back down the mountain through a system of over 26 waterfalls.

Later that day the group returned to the house for a dedication ceremony. All members of the group had traveled with a framed picture of their loved one to present to the family, the family will hang the photos in a place of honor in their new home. A plaque with the names of the loved ones was also placed on top of the door to the home. When reflecting on the experience Basmattie, Gold Star Mother of LT. Kris “Romeo” Bishundat, USN wrote the following: “This expedition was life changing for me in a very positive way…The group and everyone in the DR were all amazing human beings. I would like to continue helping others as much as possible especially Military members or anyone in need.”
