2019 - New Bern Expedition

14 - Jul - 2019 thru 20-Jul-2019
Event Recap

The TMF Family Expedition took place the week of July 14, 2019  in New Bern, NC.  Families from across the country came to serve with a family member in honor of their fallen son, brother, father and husband.  New Bern was hit hard during Hurricane Florence in 2018 losing 1/3 of the homes there as well as many hotels and businesses.  Rebuilding has been a struggle due to the fact that there was nowhere for people to stay when they came in to help.  TMF spent the week working on old Sunday school rooms at a church that will be used to house 66 relief workers that will be rotating in to help rebuild the community.

An amazing week was had by all with a lot of laughter, bonding, reminiscing and remembering while serving in honor of their family members.

Erica Johnson and her daughter Hayva joined TMF to serve together in honor of Captain Rick Johnson who died in April 2003, just 17 months shy of retirement.  Erica said her husband was all about service … and rebuilding lives. Ricky was looking forward to his post military career. He had planned to learn real estate when he was out of the service with an eye toward helping the homeless have simple, decent places to live.

“I love the motto,” Johnson said of the “If not me, then who …” statement. “I love being able to give back to the community because it was something that my husband definitely represented.”
